Tom T. Hall with Maxine & Bonnie Brown - I Wish I Loved Somebody Else
In 1978, Tom T. Hall contacted Maxine and Bonnie Brown hoping they would accompany him and lend their vocal talents to his upcoming RCA LP "New Train, Same Rider". The Browns eagerly accepted Hall's invitation. The day of the recording, Hall and his wife Dixie surprised The Browns and the production staff with yellow t-shirts that read: "The Browns Are In Town and Tom T's Got 'Em". The Browns vocals are featured on both hit singles from the album and several other songs as well. **Lyrics Below**
Vocals: Tom T. Hall, with Maxine and Bonnie Brown
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: New Train Same Rider (RCA Records - 1978)
Lyrics:
I wish I loved somebody else not you
Someone else might learn to love me too
I'm your toy and that makes me a fool
Lord, I wish I loved somebody else not you.
Each time I'm hurt it seems to make you glad
Broken toys they make some people sad
I don't know why I love you but I do
Lord, I wish I loved somebody else not you.
--- Instrumental ---
I wish I loved somebody else not you
How much worse things could they put me through
You leave me out of everything you do
Lord, I wish I loved somebody else not you.
Each time I'm hurt it seems to make you glad
Broken toys they make some people sad
I don't know why I love you but I do
Lord, I wish I loved somebody else not you...

I grew listening to Tom T Hall and then I got too cool for my parents' music. Funny how some 40 years later, I play that music and love it. There isn't a Tom T Hall song that doesn't remind me of my childhood and youth and the good times then. Thank you for that sir, and RIP

Tom T’s nickname “The Storyteller” was a great one but I think his overall gift as a musician as well as poet, and his beautiful, deeply moving singing voice, are often overlooked. As a lyricist/poet, he didn’t just tell great stories, he sometimes achieved an almost impossible compression of life experience into a handful of words. “My mother is dead/ She had long black hair/ Once she promised me a teddy bear”. (Strawberry Farms)
